The bustling atmosphere of Fiesta ng mga Pirata 2024 was charged with excitement and innovation as teams from various clusters gathered to showcase their ingenuity in the Innovation Event. Among them stood our team, comprised of Michael Entero, Diosdado Isaac Ramos, Alejane Pelandas, Bridgette Yandi, and Me, ready to tackle the challenge with our groundbreaking creation: Icumm Glass.

As the theme "Building Bridges, Breaking Barriers" echoed throughout the festival grounds, our team was determined to craft a solution that embodied these ideals. Armed with a kit containing cardboard, CDs, a tie box, a sack, and steel wire, we embarked on a journey to revolutionize communication for persons with disabilities (PWDs).

The Problem

We identified a significant communication gap PWDs face, particularly those who are deaf or hard of hearing. Traditional methods of communication, such as spoken language or written text, often need to improve in facilitating meaningful interactions for this community. Additionally, the diversity of languages and dialects across the Philippines presented further barriers to effective communication.

The Innovation: Icumm Glass

Inspired by Bridgette Yandi's vision, we conceptualized and brought to life Icumm Glass, a pair of eyeglasses equipped with revolutionary features to bridge these communication gaps:

1. Translator: Leveraging cutting-edge technology, Icumm Glass utilizes AI-powered software to translate sign language gestures into text or spoken language in real time. This functionality enables seamless communication between individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing and those who do not understand sign language.

2. Solar Power: In line with our commitment to sustainability, Icumm Glass is equipped with solar panels, allowing for eco-friendly charging and extended usage even in areas with limited access to electricity.

3. Rechargeable: For added convenience, Icumm Glass features rechargeable batteries, ensuring uninterrupted communication without the hassle of constantly replacing disposable batteries.

4. Portable Design: Designed with portability in mind, Icumm Glass is lightweight and compact, making it easy to carry and use anytime, anywhere.

5. Photochromic Lens: The photochromic lens adapts to changing light conditions, providing optimal visibility indoors and outdoors.

6. Anti-Radiation Glasses: With the well-being of users in mind, Icumm Glass incorporates anti-radiation technology to protect the eyes from harmful blue light emitted by digital screens.

7. Earpads: Recognizing the diverse needs of PWDs, Icumm Glass comes equipped with earpads, allowing individuals with hearing impairments to receive audio translations directly.

The Design and Build Phase

With the clock ticking, our team dived into designing and constructing Icumm Glass. Collaborating across disciplines, we transformed the provided materials into a functional prototype that exceeded our initial expectations. Proctors offered valuable guidance, ensuring the safety and feasibility of our innovation every step of the way.

Presentation and Judging

As the sun set on Fiesta ng mga Pirata 2024, it was time to present Icumm Glass to the judges. With confidence and passion, we showcased our creation, highlighting its creativity, relevance to the theme, functionality, and execution. The judges were impressed by the depth of our innovation and its potential to empower individuals and communities.

Recognition and Rewards

Amidst stiff competition, Icumm Glass emerged victorious, clinching the top prize in the Innovation Event. Our team's dedication, creativity, and collaborative spirit were celebrated as we received recognition for our contribution to breaking communication barriers and fostering inclusivity.

Looking Ahead

Reflecting on our journey at Fiesta ng mga Pirata 2024, we are inspired to continue pushing the boundaries of innovation and making a meaningful impact in our communities. With Icumm Glass, we have taken a significant step towards building bridges and breaking barriers. We are excited to see where this journey takes us next (After this, we will be representative in our college during the Intramurals 2024).

The Innovation Event at Fiesta ng mga Pirata 2024 was not just a competition but a testament to the power of creativity, collaboration, and innovation. Through Icumm Glass, we have demonstrated that we can overcome even the most daunting challenges with determination and ingenuity and create a brighter, more inclusive future for all.
